Technical Notes on the choice of floor finishes
The appearance of a floor is obviously by customer choice, but what usage the floor will have, and what maintenance the customer is prepared for will help decide the best finish.
Lacquer
- Generally a paler finish, although some lacquers are more ‘rich’ in their appearance than others. Buzz Uno is one of the most natural pale/clear finishes, whilst Bona Mega will give a darker colour.
- Different primers can change the colour of a floor – a solvent primer will give a rich warm colour, or a ‘white’ water based primer can be used to lighten a floor.
- 2 part lacquers will ‘cure’ (harden) more quickly than 1 part lacquers. Where the floor will be used straight after it is finished (within 48 hrs) they are a better choice.
Hardwax Oil
- Will give a much richer ‘traditional’ colour. Colours are available to give further options if required. Be aware that colours of hard wax oil will need to be buffed to give an even finish, whilst clear versions can be rolled or brushed.
- Not as hard wearing as lacquer but it can be patch repaired.
- Buzz hard wax oil is fast drying and will typically dry in the same time as a waterbased lacquer!
Oil
- The most natural of all finishes, with virtually no surface build at all.
- Needs regular maintenance and will need periodic re-oiling.
- When applied it must be buffed to remove excess.
